You create a catalog of an imaginary department store. In it you will represent at least 7 different departments, and for each department at least 4 pictures of items you might find in that department. Items must be clearly labelled in German, with reasonable prices in Euros - €

Create a map of your department store for inclusion in your catalog. Make sure the map clearly marks where each department is, where the bathrooms are (das WC), where the elevators and escalators are, the cashiers (die Kasse), and of course customer service (der Kundendienst) is. Your department store must have at least two floors. Include other small shops in your department store map also, like a beauty salon (der Schönheitssalon), or optician (der Optiker), or even a pharmacy (die Apotheke)

Your pages should be neatly and smartly decorated. Supply an address in a German, Swiss, or Austrian city. Search the Internet for how Germans represent addresses and phone number.

Here it is - this assignment will allow you to raise your Kapitel 2 Test Grade the highest letter grade above your current grade, i.e., if you got a 68 (F), you can get a 76 (D). If you got a 78 (C), you can get a 92 (B). Two parts:

Reflexive verbs - three pictures, either from magazines, or pictures of yourself (digital camera?), representing three different reflexive verbs. Write two sentences for each picture, one in the present tense, one in the present perfect tense using the associated reflexive verb.

Example:

Part 2: Personal pronouns. Wem gibst du das Geschenk?

Create a 4 part skit, similar to the overhead from yesterday that we worked on. Work in groups of three.

The first part….standing in line waiting to check. You converse about things in general, comment on the number of people in line, etc. Use comparative and superlative forms multiple times in this section..

Second part . . . . .interact with the Angestellte concerning tickets, passports, etc. Ask if the plane is on time and at what time it is departing.

Third part . . . . .you and the Angestellte discuss your luggage situation. The Angestellte then gives you the boarding pass.

Fourth part . . . . . you decide what you want to do before the plane leaves. Use gern and lieber multiple times in this section.

Be creative in your skit. Use vocabulary from Chapter One throughout.
Everyone contributes to the skit.
The skit is typed up and copies are distributed to everyone.
A copy is made for me, with the names of the work on it.

Today: we work on the script.
Tomorrow: we review briefly. You complete the script.

Was fehlt ihm denn? Etwas ist in der Schule passiert, ein Unfall in Sportklasse vielleicht. Der Junge spielt Fußball, und jetzt tut ihm das Bein sehr weh. Er ging zum Arzt, und er hat ihm etwas verschrieben, Tabletten gegen die Schmerzen, oder so was. Leider darf er keinen Sport treiben.

Zum Zahnartz!!

Alles wird bald vorüber sein. Das heißt, die Zahnspange ist sie mal los! Der Artz nimmt sie heraus; hoffentlich wachsen die Zähne richtig! Aber nächsten Monat kommt sie zum Zahnartz zurück!

Stephanie war spät, Probleme mit dem Auto, etwas mit dem Reifen. Das hat der Michaela nicht gut gefallen. Sie wartet nicht gern auf Leute. Stephanie hat kein Moped; ein Moped gehört ihrem Bruder, aber sie darf es nicht fahren.
Nächstes Jahr macht Michaela den Führerschein. Sie ist froh darüber! Es kostet viel, aber sie hat Geld gespart, und sie kann es selbst bezahlen. Dann mal los: sie gehen einkaufen, ohne eine Einkaufliste; die brauchen sie nicht!

Der Verkehr läuft gar nicht. Es gab einen Stau, und er kommt nicht durch. Ein großer Unfall ist passiert! Die Leute wollen die Straße überqueren, aber nicht bei Rot, nur bei Grün dürfen sie die Straße überqueren. In der Stadt stehen viele Leute vor einem Schaufenster. Sie halten vor dem Schaufenster an, es gibt viel Schönes zu sehen! Er kommt mit dem Fahrrad durch die Stadt, aber er konnte es nicht abstellen, es gab keinen Platz mehr! Er hat ihn zur Party nicht eingeladen, weil er ihm nicht geholfen hat.

You may write a paper, minimum three complete typewritten pages, 12 point font, double-spaced, for extra credit on your final exam grade or 4th grade quarter grade. The Maximum amount of extra credit percentage points added onto your final exam credit is 6 percentage points. 4th quarter grades can be raised an additional 5 percentage points by submitting a paper. You may submit a maximum of two papers. Here are some topics that deserve some attention:

Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press during the onset of the Reformation and its impact on the history of the German Language. Martin Luther translated the Bible from original sources into the the current German language spoken at the time. How did Gutenberg's invention and Martin Luther's work on the Bible influence direction of the German language's development?

Who were the great writers of the medieval period of German literature? What great works did they write and in what idiom did they compose their work? Who were their influences? Include quotes from various Middle High German texts.

There were many literary movements in the history of German letters. One was called the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress). Who were the most notable artists contributing to this literary movement? Where did it originate and when? Describe in detail some common characteristics of literary works written during this period. Provide direct quotes, in German, of passages from Sturm und Drang works. Project Gutenberg on the Web has hundreds of complete works of hundreds of authors. Search it for examples of Sturm und Drang-style texts.

Karl der Große, commonly known as Charlemagne in English, was a towering figure in the early history of the German people and of Europe as a whole. Describe his accomplishments with regard to German history and then to European history.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is seen as the most accomplished German man of letters in the past 400 years of German literary history. Describe his life and times and his many contributions to German and world literature. He not only was a prodigiously talented writer, he was also, well, you tell me. He was highly talented in many many fields, possibly a true polymath.

Das Nibelungenlied is recognized as monument of medieval German literature. Written by an anonymous poet, it is a supreme distillation of the various Norse and Frankish legends arising from northern Germanic Europe and the time of the Hunnish invasions in eastern and central Europe. Summarize the story, research the sources of this epic, described as Germany's Illiad, and explore its impact on art and politics throughout the ages.

How did both an East and West Germany arise from the ashes of World War II? Give a narrative timeline of the chain of events that led to the creation of a divided Germany.

Who was Friedrich der Große and what were his contributions to German history?

What was the Hanseatic League? Describe its origins and the free cities in northern-central Europe that comprised its economic block.

Who were the Vikings? What literary monuments, if any, did they leave behind? What was their impact on world culture?

Who were the Goths? What impact did these Germanic tribes make on early European history? Address the contribution of Bishop Wulfila in your paper.

Describe the current geographic and linguistic boundaries of the Germanic group of Indo-European languages. Which languages of the world are considered Germanic? How are they related and/or grouped? Create a family tree of the Germanic languages and give examples on how to say common phrases in each of these German languages.

So here are several topics related to Germany's grand history. It is definitely an incomplete list. If you have something else that pique's your interest, run it by me. Your paper must include a separate page of resources, including at least one print resource.

You express sympathy, and offer suggestions on how to get better.

The doctor asks some questions, friend responds.
Doctor recommends some specialists (refer to your handouts from yesterday!)
You take your friend to these specialists, who offer suggestions.
You take your friend home, and tell him to rest, and wish him well (Gute Besserung!)

A member from the group is chosen to type the skit and make copies for everyone, including me.
Tomorrow we perform (and record!!) the skits before the class!
Each member of the skit has equal number of lines of varying difficulty.

We read 4 accounts of German teenagers, their dreams, wishes and plans for the future. These accounts were written in the third person, as if someone interviewed them, and they included direct quotations from the interview subjects. Your assignment is to write a similar report, about yourself, written in the third person. Your typed report should include a picture of yourself and include direct quotations, as in the accounts we read in class. Use what we read as a model for your report. You may fictionalize your report or accurately describe your dreams and aspirations. Your report should answer the following questions:

Here is an excellent explanation of the past perfect tense, its formation and usage, in English. Now the similarities to the German past perfect tense (das Plusquamperfekt) are so great that this presentation in English is equivalent to the German way of forming and using the past perfect tense.

In order to use it contextually in German, we need to learn how to use some essential subordinating conjunctions. This topic comprises the bulk of the remaining grammatical material to be covered in our class. After our Kapitel 9 test we'll collapse the subordinating conjunctions into our use of the past perfect tense.

Create an elegant, multi-course meal, ein Menü, by choosing a variety of dishes from multiple Speisekarten on the WWW. Your Menü must contain the following courses:

eine Vorspeise

Each item on your Menü should have a title and a description of the item, all in German.

Use the links at an earlier blog entry for a list of restaurants in Germany with online Speisekarten.

Use a large sheet of heavy stock paper for your Menü. Write the the items in decorative script on the heavy stock paper. Decorate your Menü attractively.

Part 2 of your project is a vocabulary list of new words in your Menü: nouns, adjectives, phrases, typewritten and defined.

Study the simple past tense of the verbs we have seen on the recent worksheets and the test from last chapter. You will be tested on the simple past tense of these verbs. I will give you sentences in the present tense, and you will write them in the simple past tense.

The test will also have a short conversational exchange that you will supplement. It concerns making plans and talking about what you might need for a little excursion.

Choose an animal of your choice and create a Steckbrief of this animal. A Steckbrief is simply like a "wanted poster" containing a picture of the animal and various bits of essential information expressed in key words, phrases, etc. Here are the bits of information you need to find out about your animal of choice:

Systematik - taxonomy
Wissenschaftlicher Name - scientific name
Merkmale - characteristics
Verbreitung und Lebensraum - range and habitat
Nahrung/Ernährung - food
Unterarten - subspecies

Your Steckbrief must include a handdrawn picture of your animal. Here are a few links that list animal names in German:

You have chosen and glued ten pictures snipped from a magazine onto a large piece of white paper. Now it's time to complement these pictures with text, written in German of course!

Each picture must have a text associated with it.
Each text will have a minimum of two sentences.
Each text must be written entirely in the simple past tense.
Exception to the simple past requirement: direct quotations.
You must have at least 7 examples of modal verbs used in the simple past tense.
Your pictures and text should be "glued" together into a sensible narrative.
The text associated with the picture can have fluid references to the picture, meaning, the text need not directly describe exactly what is going in the picture. Poetic license is hereby granted, but try to relate text to picture nicely, if obliquely.
Your texts should be proofread by me.
Type your texts. Make two copies, one for cutting and pasting onto the pictures in artistic fashion, and one for me to critique.
Keep things simple, within your competency. Use simple sentences to connect your pictures in a narrative fashion. Vary your sentence structure, using sequencing words like zuerst, dann, danach, endlich, zuletzt and other time adverbs.

I can help you with vocabulary. However, I'll write only the verbal expression. You'll need to write the complete sentence in the simple past tense.

This is worthy of a post. The semester has been a decent one. Teaching German 2 and 3 in the same classroom and period has been challenging. It's not an ideal situation, but the kids were understanding and mostly patient. So here is a group photo of this classic group of kids. I really enjoyed teaching them this semester.
